Bathroom Design Tips
We renovated our bathroom a few years ago and it has completely changed the way we live.
A lot of these tips are self explanatory but here’s a little summary with a tad more explanation. Read on for each of my main interior tips when designing your bathroom.
Understand Your Tiles
I know that it might seem obvious, but make sure that your floor tiles are actually designed for the floor.
If, like me, you have been looking into tiles, you may have noticed that sometimes it is not obvious whether the tiles are designed for walls or the floor. Some retailers are great at separating out wall tiles and floor tiles or mentioning that they can be used on both.
So when looking into floor tiles, make sure to check the slip rating.
Similarly, tiles and surfaces may be porous, in which case they will need sealing. So make sure you know if they have already been sealed before purchase otherwise you will have to factor this in at installation, which may incur additional costs and time.
Easy Cleaning
Bathrooms should be designed for your day-to-day use so they need to be practical as well as beautiful, if at all possible.
Installing a handheld shower makes rinsing easier when cleaning.
Grey grout makes cleaning easier as it takes away the desperate need to clean at a moments notice.
Obviously, you will still need to clean your bathroom regularly, but at least this way dirt isn’t super easy to see.
You will want to not only make your bathroom beautiful but also functional for day to day use. This includes cleaning and you will find that cleaning grout will become a big issue for you if you opt for small tiles, as they will be surrounded by lots of grout to keep scrubbing!
The larger the tiles, the less grout to scrub clean!
Towel Rail Tip
A heated towel rail on a separate heating system is something that I wish that we considered before our bathroom renovation. I think this is an amazing idea. This way you get to have warm dry towels all year round and not just in the winter when you have your heating on. I imagine most of us have the heating turned off in the hot summer months and so if your heating isn’t on, then your heated towel rail cannot come on. So this is definitely something I’m going to do in our next house.
Design For Your Space
A lot of people have combined baths and showers. What a lot of people will also do is attempt to squeeze in a separate shower and bath into a bathroom of about the same size as ours. Let me tell you that you will find it will make the room feel cramped and small.
Combining the two will make the room appear more spacious and if you can, opt for a wider than standard bathtub to give yourself more elbow room in both the bath and the shower.
A lot of bath boards won’t fit a wider bathtub, mine only just reaches both sides of the tub and it’s the widest bath board I could find!
Taps in the middle of the bathtub or somewhere easily accessible when wearing clothes means that you can happily turn the water on to warm up before you actually get in the shower. I don’t know about you but I’ve always hated having to get in the shower to turn it on and have that first spurt of freezing water all over me.
Steel-enamel is a great choice, it’s more expensive but it does mean that it lasts longer than standard bathtubs
Vanity Unit Must Haves
I always thought I wanted a raised basin until I realised that water was likely to trickle down or splash into the crease where the basin meets the vanity surface. I realised that it would be likely to get a build up of limescale and be difficult to clean. They also often don’t have an overflow, which is a concern if you have children who might accidentally leave the tap running.
A sunken basin for the win!
Levers for handles are a must in my books!
When you have wet hands, this is much easier than turning knobs.
So there you have it. Some very simple and seemingly obvious tips yet so many people don’t think these things through when designing their bathroom. Save this for future reference when you come to design your bathroom.
